When you need glass doors and patio doors

If any of the following describes what you are looking at, this is the service that handles it.

  • A shattered sliding door panel
  • Fog between the panes of a patio door
  • A slider that is heavy, jumps or will not glide
  • Upgrading to a wider opening or a bi-fold door

What this service covers

  • Tempered glass replacement in sliding patio doors, French doors and bi-fold doors.
  • Failed sealed units in double glazed door panels, where the glass has fogged.
  • Rollers, tracks, handles and locks on sliding doors that no longer glide.
  • Complete new door units where the door itself has failed.
  • Laminated glass options where street noise or security is the concern.
What this service does not cover
  • Commercial aluminum storefront entry doors, which are covered by storefront glass.
  • Solid doors with a small glass insert, where a joiner is usually the right trade for the door itself.
  • Screen doors and insect screens.

Working out what is wrong

Glass problem or hardware problem

Sliding doors generate two very different kinds of call, and they cost very different amounts to put right. This table tells you which one you have before you phone anyone.

Sliding and hinged glass door symptoms and their usual cause
Symptom Usual cause Scale of the job
Heavy to slide, drags or jumps off line Worn rollers, damaged track or debris in the track. Hardware repair. The smallest of these jobs.
Fog or haze between the panes Failed sealed unit inside the door panel. Tempered sealed unit made to order, existing frame reused.
Cracked or shattered panel Impact or stress damage. Tempered panel made to order. Board up first if the opening is exposed.
Does not lock, or the lock does not line up The door has dropped on worn rollers, or the frame has moved. Usually hardware and adjustment rather than glass.
Drafts and water coming in at the frame Perished weather seals, or the door frame itself has failed. Seals if the frame is sound, a new door unit if it is not.
If a patio door panel has shattered

Tempered glass breaks into a large number of small pieces at once, which usually means the whole panel is gone rather than cracked. That leaves a full height opening. Call us and treat it as an emergency board up, because the replacement panel has to be manufactured before it can be fitted.

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of glass doors and patio doors
  • Panel size and weight, because patio door glass is large and always tempered.
  • Whether only the glass is replaced or the whole door unit.
  • Sealed unit glass options such as low emissivity coatings and laminated glass for noise.
  • Rollers, tracks and handles when the door has stopped moving properly.
  • Whether the opening is standard or has to be measured and made to order.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about glass doors and patio doors

Why does patio door glass cost more than window glass of the same size?

Because it has to be tempered safety glass. California building code requires safety glazing in doors and in glass beside doors. Tempered glass is heat treated and cannot be cut afterwards, so every panel is manufactured to your exact measurements rather than cut from stock. Patio door panels are also large and heavy, which means more people on site to handle them safely.

My sliding door has become very heavy to open. Is that the glass?

Almost never. A slider that has become heavy, jumps, or drags is usually worn rollers, a damaged track, or debris packed into the track. The glass weighs the same as it always did. We can replace rollers and repair or cap a worn track, which is a far smaller job than replacing the door and usually restores the movement completely.

Can one panel of a sliding door be replaced on its own?

Yes, in most cases. The broken panel is measured, the tempered glass is made, and it goes back into the existing frame. Where the door is old and the frame section has been discontinued, matching can be harder, and we will tell you at the estimate stage if we think a complete door unit is the more sensible route.

Is laminated glass worth it in a patio door?

It is worth considering if the door faces a busy street or if security matters to you. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer bonded between two sheets. It damps sound noticeably better than a standard sealed unit, and when it breaks the interlayer holds the pieces together rather than letting the panel drop out. It costs more than standard tempered glass.

The glass in my patio door has fogged up. Is that the same as a window?

Yes, exactly the same. A double glazed door panel contains a sealed glass unit, and when its edge seal fails, moisture enters the cavity between the panes and cannot be cleaned out. The unit is replaced and the door frame stays in place. The only difference from a window is that the unit will be tempered, so it is made to order.
