Commercial glass

Commercial Storefront Glass Repair and Replacement

This is the service for a smashed storefront window

Roxy Glass repairs and replaces commercial storefront glass, aluminum storefront framing and glass entry doors. Storefront glass is tempered or laminated safety glass and is usually made to order for the opening, so the priority is getting the opening secured first and the permanent glass fitted as soon as it is made.

What to expect

Getting a broken storefront back to trading

A broken shopfront is a trading problem before it is a glass problem. The premises are insecure, the unit may not be able to open, and every hour matters. The honest sequence is short and it has not changed in decades.

Secure the opening today. Measure it today. Fit the permanent glass when it has been manufactured. Boarding is not a stalling tactic, it is what protects the stock and the premises during the days that fabrication takes.

Where a unit needs to keep trading behind the boarding, tell us when we attend. There are usually options for how the opening is closed that keep an entrance usable, and it is far easier to plan that at the first visit than to change it afterwards.

For property managers

Managing glass across several units or sites

If you look after a portfolio rather than a single unit, a few things make glass work far less painful to administer.

Itemized estimates that separate the emergency

We split the emergency attendance and board up from the permanent glass on both the estimate and the invoice, because that is the split insurers and tenants ask for and it saves you rebuilding the numbers yourself.

Record the glass specification once

Keep the panel sizes, thicknesses and glass types for each unit on file. When a panel goes in the future, having the specification already recorded takes a step out of the process and shortens the lead time.

Agree access arrangements in advance

Out of hours access, keyholders, loading restrictions and center rules are the things that most often delay a job. Telling us at the estimate stage means the scheduling is realistic rather than optimistic.

Verify the contractor once, properly

Our California contractor license, the bond and the workers compensation record are all on the public CSLB record and can be checked in under a minute. See how to verify us.

The work itself

What storefront glass looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • A salon storefront under a striped awning, labeled one store front glass replaced
One pane replaced One salon storefront pane replaced One pane in this salon storefront was replaced. Only the damaged pane needed new glass, so the rest of the frontage stayed as it was.
  • An optometry office with a tile roof and a wood trellis, labeled side glass pane replaced
Side pane replaced Optometry office side pane replaced A side glass pane was replaced at this optometry office. Matching a single pane keeps the building front looking the way it did before.
  • The storefront windows of a sandwich shop under its sign, with a covered walkway at one side
Large storefront panes Sandwich shop storefront windows Large storefront windows at a sandwich shop. Panes this size are cut to order, so the opening is measured before the glass is made.

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of storefront glass
  • Opening size, since storefront panels are large and usually made to order.
  • Whether tempered or laminated glass is required, and any security glazing that is specified.
  • Frame condition, because damaged aluminum framing may need repair before glass goes in.
  • Whether the opening needs boarding first while the glass is fabricated.
  • Working hours, since some shopping centers and landlords only allow work outside trading hours.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about storefront glass

Can you replace a broken storefront window the same day?

We can secure it the same day. The permanent glass almost always has to be made. Storefront glass must be tempered or laminated safety glass, and tempered glass cannot be cut after it has been treated, so every panel is manufactured to the measured size. Any company promising permanent storefront glass within the hour is either fitting the wrong glass or has your exact size already made.

How quickly can you get the premises secure?

Securing the opening is the priority and it is a separate visit from fitting the permanent glass. Call the line for your area, tell us the address, the rough opening size and whether anyone is on site. We will tell you when we can attend rather than giving you a figure we cannot stand behind.

Do I need tempered or laminated glass in a storefront?

Safety glazing is required by code in and beside doors and in large areas of glass at ground level, so it will be one of the two. Tempered is the standard choice. Laminated is worth considering where security or noise matters, because the plastic interlayer holds the glass together when it breaks, which slows down forced entry and keeps the opening closed rather than empty.

Will my insurance cover this?

Many commercial policies cover glass breakage, and an emergency board up is normally treated as reasonable mitigation. We cannot tell you what your policy covers, but we can give you an itemized estimate and invoice separating the emergency attendance from the permanent glass, which is usually what an insurer asks for. Photograph the damage before anything is cleared.

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Yes, and for many retail units in shopping centers it is the only option the landlord allows. Tell us the access arrangements and any restrictions at the estimate stage, because it affects both the scheduling and the cost, and we would rather price it correctly at the start than surprise you later.

The aluminum frame is bent as well as the glass being broken. What then?

The frame has to be sound before glass goes back into it, otherwise the new panel sits under stress and is likely to fail. We assess the framing when we secure the opening and tell you whether it can be repaired or whether that section needs replacing. That is quoted separately from the glass so you can see what you are paying for.
