Planning a fit out

Five decisions to make before glass is ordered

Partition glass is made to order and cannot be altered on site, so these decisions are worth settling before anything is measured.

  1. How private does each room need to be

A meeting room where confidential conversations happen needs a different specification from a quiet booth. Decide privacy room by room, because upgrading the glass everywhere to suit the most demanding room is an expensive way to solve one problem.

  2. Framed or frameless

Frameless gives the cleanest look and the most light. Framed and channel systems are more forgiving of site conditions, easier to reconfigure and generally less expensive.

  3. How the doors work

Swing doors need clear space to open into. Sliding doors save that floor space but need a clear wall to slide against and are harder to seal well. This choice affects both the layout and the acoustic performance.

  4. Manifestation and branding

Large areas of clear glass on a walking route need to be visible. That requirement is also an opportunity, since frosted bands, printed patterns and applied graphics all solve it while doing something for the space.

  5. What happens above and below

Partitions have to interface with the ceiling grid, the lighting, the sprinklers, the air conditioning and the floor finish. Coordinating that before measuring avoids the most common and most expensive fit out clash.

The work itself

What glass partition walls looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • A shop inside a shopping mall with a frameless glass front and an open entrance
Frameless glass Frameless glass shop front in a mall Frameless glass panels form the front of this shop inside a shopping mall, so the whole store stays in view from the walkway.
  • A side view of a mall shop with tall frameless glass panels beside the neighboring stores

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of glass partition walls
  • The linear run of partition and the number of doors.
  • Framed or frameless, and the track and channel system used.
  • Glass thickness and any acoustic or laminated specification.
  • Door hardware, including patch fittings, closers, locks and sliding gear.
  • Site conditions such as floor level, ceiling height and out of square walls.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about glass partition walls

How much sound do glass partitions actually block?

Less than a solid wall, and how much less depends heavily on the specification. Single glazed frameless partitions block conversational sound but are not private. Laminated glass performs noticeably better than plain tempered glass, and a double glazed partition better again. The weakest points are almost always the gaps at the floor, the ceiling and around the door rather than the glass itself, so the seals matter as much as the panel.

Can glass partitions be moved or reconfigured later?

Framed and channel based systems can generally be taken down and reconfigured, which is one of their advantages over building a stud wall. The glass panels themselves are cut to specific sizes and cannot be trimmed, so a new layout usually needs at least some new panels. If you expect to reconfigure, tell us at the design stage and the run can be planned in more repeatable panel widths.

Does the floor and ceiling need to be level?

They need to be measured, not perfect. Very few commercial floors and suspended ceilings are dead level across a long run, and that is normal. We measure the actual conditions at several points and the panels and channels are made to suit. A partition ordered from a drawing rather than a site measurement is the usual reason a run does not fit.

Is the glass safe in an office where people walk into it?

Partition glass is tempered safety glass, which is much stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces. Full height glass also needs to be visible so that people do not walk into it, which is normally handled with manifestation such as a frosted band, a printed pattern or applied graphics at eye level. We will raise it if a proposed layout has large areas of unmarked clear glass across a walking route.

How long does a partition installation take?

The panels are made to your measured sizes, so the fabrication lead time between measuring and installing is what sets the schedule. The installation itself is usually quick relative to the lead time. In an occupied office we can normally work in sections or outside working hours so the floor stays usable.
