Sliding Glass Door Repair and Replacement

This is the service for a shattered slider panel

A sliding glass door has two problems that look alike and are not: the glass, and the way the door moves. Roxy Glass replaces a broken or fogged sliding door panel with tempered safety glass cut to the opening, and replaces the rollers and track when the door has become heavy. Patio door glass is tempered by code because of its size and position, so a panel is always made to the measured size rather than cut from stock.

When you need sliding glass doors

If any of the following describes what you are looking at, this is the service that handles it.

  • A shattered or cracked sliding panel
  • Fog or moisture between the panes of a slider
  • A door that is heavy, sticks, jumps or lifts out of the track
  • A door that no longer locks because it has dropped

What this service covers

  • Replacing a shattered or cracked sliding door panel in tempered safety glass.
  • Replacing a fogged sealed unit in a double pane slider.
  • New rollers, tracks and guides on a door that has become heavy or jumps.
  • Handles, latches and locks on a door that has dropped out of alignment.
  • Complete new sliding door units, measured and fitted to the existing opening.

  • Structural work to widen an opening, which is a contractor's job before we measure.

This page covers one kind of work within Glass Doors and Patio Doors. If you are not sure which you need, start there.

Glass or rollers: telling them apart in two minutes

These two faults bring the same phone call and need completely different work. You can usually tell which one you have from the floor.

Lift the panel slightly

Take the weight of the door with both hands and lift half an inch, then slide. If it suddenly moves easily, the rollers are worn and the glass is fine. That one test answers the question most of the time.

Look along the bottom track

A track packed with grit, or one with a flattened and shiny wear line down the middle, is a track that has been carrying the door rather than letting it roll. Grit is what destroys rollers, so a track that is cleaned out occasionally lasts far longer.

Check whether it still locks

A door that used to lock and now needs lifting to catch has dropped, which is a roller and alignment problem rather than a lock problem. Replacing the latch on a dropped door does not fix it for long.

If the glass is fogged, the door is not broken

Fog between the panes of a slider means the seal around the sealed unit has failed and moisture is now inside it. The door still works and the opening is still secure, so there is no urgency, and no amount of cleaning will reach it. The unit is replaced, not the door. See double pane and foggy glass.

The work itself

What sliding glass doors looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • A row of black framed windows along a wooden deck under a pergola
Covered deck windows Black framed windows along a covered deck Black framed windows along a covered wooden deck. Low windows beside a walkway may call for safety glass in the lower panes.
  • A plumbing supply store with a wide run of glass doors and windows under a flat awning
Supply store storefront Glass storefront at a supply store A wide storefront of glass doors and windows at a supply business. Each door and window lite is its own pane, sized to its frame.
  • A restaurant storefront at night with a glass door and large windows, labeled store front glass

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of sliding glass doors
  • Panel size and weight, since a full height slider panel is heavy enough to need two people.
  • Whether the glass alone is replaced or the whole door unit.
  • Whether the fault is the glass or the rollers, which decides whether glass is needed at all.
  • Low emissivity coatings and laminated glass, for heat and for road noise.
  • Whether the frame is aluminum, vinyl or wood, because each comes apart differently.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about sliding glass doors

My sliding door is really heavy to open. Does the glass need replacing?

Almost certainly not. A heavy slider is nearly always rollers rather than glass. The rollers sit under the bottom rail and they wear flat, and once they do, the whole weight of the panel drags on the track instead of rolling along it. The glass is usually perfect. This is worth knowing before you call, because a roller job is a fraction of the cost of a glass job and we bring different things for each.

Why does a patio door panel cost more than a window of the same size?

Because building code requires safety glazing in a door, so a sliding door panel is tempered glass. Tempered glass is heat treated after it is cut, which means it cannot be trimmed afterwards: every panel is made to the measured size and there is a fabrication lead time. A window of the same area can often be cut from stock on the day. The glass itself is also heavier, and a full height panel usually needs two people to carry and set.

The glass has shattered into small pieces all over the floor. Is that normal?

Yes, and it tells you the glass was doing its job. Tempered glass is made to break into small blunt pieces rather than long sharp shards, which is exactly why code requires it in a door. It also means there is nothing left to secure the opening with, so a shattered patio door is one of the situations where a board up comes first and the permanent glass follows once it has been made. See <a href="/services/emergency-board-up/">emergency board up</a>.

Can you replace just the glass, or do I need a whole new door?

Just the glass, in most cases. If the frame is straight, the track is sound and the door locks when it is lifted into place, replacing the panel is the right answer and the cheaper one. A whole unit makes sense when the frame itself is bent or corroded, when the door is single pane and you want double, or when the existing door is an obsolete size and hardware for it is no longer made.

How do I measure a sliding door panel before I call?

You do not need to, and we would rather you did not rely on it. Roxy Glass measures the opening as part of the visit, because a panel measured from the outside of the frame rather than the glass line is the single most common reason a replacement does not fit. What helps enormously is a photo of the whole door from a few feet back, plus a photo of the bottom track, which tells us the frame type and the roller style before we arrive.
