Shower Door and Glass Enclosure Installation

This is the service for a cracked shower panel

Roxy Glass measures, supplies and installs frameless, semi frameless and framed shower doors and enclosures in tempered safety glass. Bathroom openings are rarely square, so the glass is measured after tiling and cut to the real opening. That is what keeps a frameless door closing properly and the seals working.

Choosing

Frameless, semi frameless or framed

All three use tempered safety glass. What changes is the thickness of the glass, how it is supported, how it looks and how much it costs.

Comparing the three shower enclosure types
Type How it is built Best suited to Things to know
Frameless Thick tempered glass carrying its own weight, fixed with hinges and clamps into the wall, no metal along the panel edges. Open, uninterrupted look. Small bathrooms where a frame would make the space feel closed in. Heaviest glass, so the wall fixings must go into solid backing. Needs the most accurate measuring. Highest cost.
Semi frameless Slim frame around the fixed panels, free edge on the door itself. Most of the frameless appearance at a lower cost, and more forgiving of an imperfect opening. A visible frame remains on the fixed sections. Middle of the range on price.
Framed Metal frame around every edge, thinner tempered glass inside it. Budget conscious work, rental property, and openings that are noticeably out of square. Frames collect water and need cleaning. Least expensive and usually the quickest to fit.

Getting the order right

Where shower glass fits in a bathroom remodel

If you are managing a remodel, this sequence saves you the most common and most expensive mistake in the whole job.

  1. Framing, plumbing and waterproofing

All of it complete, including the shower base or tray set in its final position.

  2. Tiling finished and grouted

Every surface the glass will touch or sit against must be in its finished state.

  3. We measure

Now the opening is real, we measure it including how far out of square and out of plumb it actually is, and confirm what the wall fixings will go into.

  4. Glass is fabricated

Every panel is cut, the edges are polished and any hardware cut outs are made before tempering, because tempered glass cannot be worked afterwards.

  5. We install

Hardware is fixed, panels are set, the door is adjusted so it closes evenly, and the seals go on.

Do not order shower glass before tiling

Hardware cut outs and edge polishing are done before the glass is tempered, and tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or trimmed afterwards. A panel measured from unfinished walls that turns out to be wrong cannot be adjusted on site. It has to be made again.

The work itself

What shower doors and enclosures looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • A bathroom with a glass shower enclosure behind a soaking tub and a long double vanity

  • A bathroom with a frameless glass shower enclosure beside a tiled corner tub and a shuttered window

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of shower doors and enclosures
  • Frameless, semi frameless or framed, which is the single largest driver.
  • Glass thickness, since frameless panels use much heavier glass than framed enclosures.
  • Glass finish, including clear, low iron ultra clear, obscure, rain and frosted patterns.
  • Hardware finish and the type of hinges, handles and clamps.
  • The shape of the opening, such as a neo angle, a corner return or a curved panel.
  • Whether the tiled opening is out of square or out of plumb, which changes how the glass is cut.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about shower doors and enclosures

When should the shower glass be measured?

After the tiling is finished and the shower base is set, and never before. Glass is cut to the finished opening, so measuring over bare studs or unfinished tile produces glass that does not fit. This is the single most common cause of a shower door that has to be remade, and it is entirely avoidable by sequencing the trades correctly.

What is the real difference between frameless and semi frameless?

Frameless uses thick tempered glass that supports itself, with hinges and clamps fixed into the wall and no metal around the edges of the panels. Semi frameless keeps a slim frame on the fixed panels but leaves the door edge free. Framed has metal around every edge. Frameless costs the most, because it uses much heavier glass and needs the wall fixings to be into something solid.

My bathroom walls are not square. Does that matter?

It matters a great deal, and it is normal. Very few tiled openings are perfectly square or plumb. That is precisely why the glass is measured on site after tiling and cut to the real opening rather than to a nominal size. A frameless door hung in an out of square opening without allowing for it will not close evenly or seal properly.

Is shower glass safe if it breaks?

Shower glass is tempered safety glass, which is required by code in a bathing area. Tempered glass is much stronger than ordinary glass, and when it does break it breaks into small blunt pieces rather than long sharp shards. That is why an off the shelf sheet of ordinary glass is never an acceptable substitute in a shower.

Can you replace one broken panel rather than the whole enclosure?

Often yes, if the hardware is still available and the remaining panels are sound. We measure the panel and match the thickness, the glass finish and the hardware cut outs. Where the hardware has been discontinued and cannot be matched, replacing the enclosure is sometimes the only route, and we will tell you which situation you are in before you commit.

Do frameless doors leak?

A correctly measured and installed frameless enclosure controls water rather than sealing it like a submarine, and that is by design. Water is managed by the slope of the base, the overlap of the panels, the door swing and seals at the right edges. Leaks almost always come from a base that does not fall correctly, a door hung in an opening that was not measured after tiling, or missing seals rather than from frameless glass itself.
