Specifying it

The choices that decide how a mirror looks

A mirror is one of the few pieces of glass in a house that people look at every single day, so these details are worth a minute of thought.

Edge finish

A flat polished edge is clean and modern and is the usual choice for a frameless wall mirror. A bevelled edge cuts a shallow angle around the perimeter that catches the light and reads as more traditional. A pencil edge is softly rounded and sits between the two.

One panel or several

Mirror can only be made and handled up to a certain size, and getting a very large panel through a doorway and up a stair is often the real limit. A long wall is usually done as matched panels with tight joints, and we plan where those joints fall rather than leaving it to chance.

Standard or safety backed

Standard mirror is right for most bedroom and hallway walls. Safety backed mirror is the right answer over a bath, in a gym, in any commercial space and anywhere a fall would put broken glass where people are.

Bathroom mirrors last longer with a sealed edge

De-silvering nearly always starts at the edges, because that is where moisture reaches the reflective coating on the back. In a bathroom, keeping the edges out of standing water, running an extractor fan and avoiding cleaning sprays applied directly to the edge all extend the life of the mirror considerably.

The work itself

What mirrors and closet doors looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • A full wall of mirrors in an open studio with a wood floor and a railing along a raised level
Mirror wall Mirror wall in an open studio A full height mirror wall in an open studio. Large mirror walls are set as a run of panels, so the joints line up and the reflection stays true.

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of mirrors and closet doors
  • Mirror size and thickness, and whether the wall needs more than one panel.
  • Edge finish, including flat polished, bevelled and pencil edge.
  • Cut outs for outlets, switches, sconces and taps.
  • Safety backing where a mirror sits over a bath, in a gym or in a commercial space.
  • How it is fixed, since adhesive, clips and cleats suit different walls and weights.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about mirrors and closet doors

Why has my mirror gone black or cloudy around the edges?

That is de-silvering. A mirror is glass with a reflective metal coating on the back, protected by a layer of paint. When moisture reaches that coating, usually at the unsealed edges in a bathroom, the metal corrodes and you get the dark spotting or cloudy border. It cannot be repaired or polished out, because the damage is to the coating behind the glass. The mirror is replaced.

Can you cut a mirror around my outlets and light fittings?

Yes, and it is a normal part of the job. We measure the exact positions of outlets, switches, sconces and tap fittings and cut the mirror around them. That work is done at the shop before the mirror comes to site, so the positions have to be measured accurately, which is why we measure rather than working from a sketch.

How is a large mirror actually fixed to the wall?

It depends on the wall and the weight. Mirror adhesive bonds the mirror to the wall and is often combined with clips at the bottom edge to carry the load while the adhesive cures. Heavier panels can be hung on a cleat. J-channel and clips suit a mirror that may need to come off again. We choose based on what the wall is made of and how heavy the panel is, and we will tell you which method we are using.

What is safety backed mirror and do I need it?

Safety backed mirror has a film applied to the back so that if the glass breaks, the pieces are held on the film rather than falling. It is used where a broken mirror would be dangerous, such as above a bath, in a gym, in a commercial space or anywhere children are close to full height glass. It costs more than standard mirror and it is worth it in those locations.

Can one panel of a mirrored closet door be replaced?

Usually yes. The panel is measured, cut and fitted back into the existing door frame, which is much less expensive than a new door set. Where the frame itself is bent or the rollers and track have failed, we will tell you, because a new panel in a door that does not run properly does not solve the actual problem.
