Residential and commercial glass

Emergency Glass Board Up for Homes and Businesses

This is the service for a smashed shop window

An emergency board up secures a broken opening straight away. Roxy Glass clears the broken glass, boards the opening so the property is closed and weatherproof, then measures for the replacement glass. Most storefront and large residential glass is made to order, so boarding first is what makes the property safe while the glass is fabricated.

When you need emergency board up

If any of the following describes what you are looking at, this is the service that handles it.

  • A smashed storefront or shop window
  • A break in that has left an opening
  • Storm or impact damage to a large window
  • Glass that has shattered and is unsafe to leave

What this service covers

  • Clearing broken glass from the opening and from inside the property.
  • Boarding the opening so the property is closed, secure and weatherproof.
  • Storefronts, entry doors, display windows and residential windows.
  • Measuring for the permanent glass while we are there, so fabrication can start.
  • Fitting the permanent glass and removing the boarding once the glass is made.
What this service does not cover
  • Structural damage to the building around the opening, which needs a general contractor before glass can go back.
  • Frames that were destroyed rather than just emptied of glass. Those need storefront glass or window replacement work as well.
  • Security shutters, roller grilles and alarm systems, which are a different trade.

The part people do not expect

Almost nobody can fit your permanent glass today

This is the single most useful thing to understand when a large window goes in. If a company tells you they will replace a broken storefront with permanent glass within the hour, ask what glass they are fitting.

Storefront glass, patio door glass and any glass in or beside a door has to be tempered or laminated safety glass under California building code. Tempered glass is heat treated in a furnace and cannot be cut afterwards, because cutting it makes it shatter. That means every tempered panel is manufactured to a specific size, and it cannot be taken off a shelf and trimmed on site.

So the honest sequence for a broken storefront is always the same. Secure it now, measure it now, fit the permanent glass when it has been made. A board up is not a delay tactic. It is the part of the job that protects the property while the real glass is built.

The opening is open right now

Call the line for your area. Tell us the address, the rough size of the opening and whether anyone is on site. If nobody can stay with the property, say so, because that changes the priority.

Call your local line

Outside published hours Call anyway if the property is not secure. Attending outside published hours is charged differently and we will tell you the basis before we come.

Do this first

What to do before we arrive

  • Keep people away from the opening and from any standing glass in the frame.
  • Photograph the damage from a few angles before anything is moved or cleared, in case you claim on insurance.
  • Do not pull loose pieces out of the frame. Glass held in a frame is under tension and can release suddenly.
  • Move stock, displays, furniture and anything valuable away from the opening if it is safe to do so.
  • If this was a break in, contact the police before the scene is disturbed and get the report number.
  • Have the address, the rough opening size and a contact who can give access ready when you call.

The work itself

What emergency board up looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • Before and after photos of a large store window, first covered with plywood and then glazed, with red shopping carts inside
Before and after Store window boarded, then reglazed A large storefront pane was boarded with plywood while the replacement was made. The after photo shows the finished window with clear glass from edge to edge.
  • Before and after photos of a dark framed shop door, first with cardboard over the lower opening and then with clear glass
Before and after Door glass replaced after a temporary cover Cardboard closed the lower opening of this shop door for a short time. The after photo shows the door with a new clear lower pane.
  • A black aluminum storefront door propped open at a shop entrance, with work gloves on the walkway
During the job Storefront door during glass work A shop door is held open while its glass is worked on. Door glass must be safety glass, so the new pane is made to the exact size of the frame.

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Call the line for your area

Tell us where the opening is, roughly how big it is and whether the property is currently open to the street. That tells us what to bring and how urgent it is.

  2. We clear the broken glass

Loose and standing glass comes out of the frame under control, and glass inside the property is cleared so the space can be used again.

  3. The opening is secured

Boarding goes across the opening and is fixed so the property is closed against entry and weather. This is the part that stops the situation getting worse.

  4. We measure while we are there

The opening is measured for the permanent glass before we leave, so fabrication can start rather than waiting for a second visit.

  5. The permanent glass is fitted

Once the glass is made we return, take the boarding away and fit the glass. You get the itemised estimate for this part before it is ordered.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of emergency board up
  • Opening size and how much material is needed to close it.
  • Whether broken glass has to be cleared from inside the premises.
  • The time of day, since after hours attendance is charged differently.
  • Access and height, including upper floor and shopfront openings.
  • The permanent glass that follows, which is quoted separately once measured.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about emergency board up

Why can you not just fit the new glass straight away?

Because most large glass is made to order. Storefront glass and patio door glass have to be tempered or laminated safety glass by code, and tempered glass cannot be cut after it is treated, so it is manufactured to your exact measurements. Boarding the opening is what makes the property safe and secure during the days that fabrication takes.

What does a board up actually involve?

We clear the broken glass from the frame and from inside the property, check the frame is safe to work with, then fit boarding across the opening and fix it so the opening is closed against entry and weather. Before we leave we measure the opening for the permanent glass, so the order can be placed the same day where possible.

Will boarding damage my frame or storefront?

The aim is always to fix into the existing frame or surround without adding damage, and for most aluminum storefront systems and residential frames that is achievable. Where an opening cannot take a fixing without damage, we tell you what the alternative is before we do it rather than afterwards.

Can I claim this on insurance?

Many commercial and homeowner policies cover glass breakage, and a board up is usually treated as reasonable emergency mitigation. We cannot tell you what your policy covers, but we can give you an itemised estimate and invoice that separates the emergency board up from the permanent glass, which is normally what an insurer wants to see. Photograph the damage before anything is moved.

Do you charge differently outside business hours?

Attending outside published opening hours costs more than a scheduled daytime visit, and that is normal across the trade. We tell you the basis for the charge when you call rather than after the work. Our published hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

How long will the boarding be up for?

Until the permanent glass has been manufactured and fitted. The timing depends on the size of the opening and what the glass has to be, and we give you an expected date once the opening is measured. Boarding is designed to hold securely for that period, not indefinitely.
