French Door Glass Repair and Replacement

This is the service for one broken French door pane

French doors fail one pane at a time, which is usually good news. Roxy Glass replaces the individual glass panel in a French door with tempered safety glass, including divided light doors where the glazing bars mean several small panes rather than one large one. Where the door has a sealed double pane unit, the unit is replaced rather than the door.

Why a French door usually breaks one pane at a time

The thing that makes French doors expensive to build is the thing that makes them cheap to repair. Understanding that is worth money when you come to get it quoted.

Each light is its own piece

In a true divided light door, every pane sits in its own rebate with its own bead. A break in one is contained by the glazing bars around it, so the damage stops where the bar is and the neighboring panes stay sound.

Fog is a different fault

Fog means a sealed unit has lost its seal, which only applies to double pane doors. The door is still secure and still works, so there is no urgency. The unit is swapped and the door stays where it is.

A dropped pair is not a glass fault

When a pair of doors no longer meet in the middle, the hinges have usually sagged under the weight of the glass. That is adjustment rather than glazing, and replacing glass will not change it.

The work itself

What french doors looks like on site

These are the stages the job actually runs through, from the first look at the opening to the finished glass.

  • A row of black framed windows along a wooden deck under a pergola
Covered deck windows Black framed windows along a covered deck Black framed windows along a covered wooden deck. Low windows beside a walkway may call for safety glass in the lower panes.
  • A plumbing supply store with a wide run of glass doors and windows under a flat awning
Supply store storefront Glass storefront at a supply store A wide storefront of glass doors and windows at a supply business. Each door and window lite is its own pane, sized to its frame.
  • A restaurant storefront at night with a glass door and large windows, labeled store front glass

What happens next

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what happened

Call the line for your area or send the estimate form. A photo of the damage and a rough measurement lets us tell you straight away whether it is a glass only repair or a full replacement.

  2. We measure the opening

Glass is cut to the opening, not to a catalog size, so the measurement has to be exact. For most jobs we measure on site. For a simple pane you can measure it yourself and we will tell you how.

  3. You get a written estimate

The estimate is free and it sets out the glass type, the thickness, whether safety glazing is required and what the work involves. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

  4. The glass is made

Standard glass is usually cut at our Newark shop. Sealed double pane units, tempered glass and made to order shapes are fabricated to your measurements, which is what sets the lead time.

  5. We fit it and clear up

We fit the glass, check that it seals and operates properly, and take the old glass and packaging away with us.

Cost

What changes the price

What changes the price of french doors
  • Whether the door is a single large pane or divided into smaller lights by glazing bars.
  • How many panes are affected, since several small panes in one visit cost less each.
  • Whether the glazing bars are structural or applied to the surface of a sealed unit.
  • Obscure, reeded and frosted options where the door needs privacy.
  • Whether the frame is wood, which is bedded differently from vinyl or clad.

Roxy Glass does not publish a fixed price for this work, because the price depends on the opening in front of us. Estimates are free, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the measurements and a photo, or to have us come and measure.

Questions

Questions about french doors

One small pane in my French door is broken. Do I need a whole new door?

No, and you should be careful of anyone who tells you otherwise. A French door is glazed pane by pane, so a single broken light is replaced on its own and the rest of the door is untouched. This is the least expensive door glass repair there is. A whole new door is only the right answer when the door itself is rotten, bowed, or so far out of square that it no longer closes.

What is a divided light door, and does it cost more?

A divided light door has the glass area split into several smaller panes by glazing bars. True divided lights are individually glazed, so each broken pane is a separate small piece of glass. It costs more per door than a single large pane would, but it also means a cricket ball through one corner is a small repair rather than a large one. Many modern doors instead have a single sealed unit with bars stuck to the surface to imitate the look, which changes the repair completely.

How do I tell whether my glazing bars are real or applied?

Run a finger along the bar on both sides of the glass at the same point. If you can feel a bar on the inside and the outside and the glass is clearly recessed between them, the lights are individually glazed. If the bar is only on the surface, or you can feel it on one face and the other side is flat, it is an applied bar over one sealed unit. In that case a single break means the whole unit is replaced, bars and all.

Does French door glass have to be tempered?

Yes. Glass in a door, and glass next to a door within a certain distance of the floor, has to be safety glazing under building code, and in practice that means tempered. It is not optional and it is not a sales upsell. Tempered glass is heat treated after cutting and cannot be trimmed afterwards, so every pane is made to the measured size, which is why there is a short lead time rather than a same day fix.

Several panes are broken. Is it cheaper to do them together?

Considerably, yes. Most of the cost of a small pane is the visit rather than the glass. Measuring and fitting four small lights in one appointment costs far less than four separate appointments, so it is always worth walking the door and the adjacent sidelights and telling us every pane that needs doing when you first call.
